It’s happening!

Aaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh! I’m writing this from DFW airport. We leave in 3 hours!

I’ve been spontaneously crying for two days, which won’t surprise anyone who knows me. I cried when they picked up the dog. I cried into my breakfast burrito at the airport. I’ve cried over various inspirational instagram photos. I cried saying goodbye to a client or two.

We used a pet moving company to get Coach to Liechtenstein. The TLDR is that right now US based airlines aren’t flying pets internationally. Maybe one day I’ll write a post about the entire process of moving a dog, and it’ll be a forty-six minute read because it was so much work.

Because of *reasons* Coach’s flight went from Houston > Amsterdam > Zurich. Our flight is going from Dallas > DC > Zurich. We had some lovely people come to our home at 5am yesterday to take her to Houston and they sent us pictures of her at the airport.

She is currently at the Amsterdam Animal Hotel and will fly to Zurich later today. She gets there before us, then gets picked up by some Swiss people who will deliver her to us in Liechtenstein tomorrow afternoon.

The last few days have been a whirlwind. Here are some things I learned about moving:

  • We have so much stuff! How? Where were we hiding it all? The movers came two weeks ago and took everything except two weeks worth of clothes and electronics; and yet, every day for two weeks we threw away like 6 full garbage bags of stuff. Why!?
  • We have really amazing and wonderful neighbors (shout out Jenn & Evan!) who opened their home to us & also took all of the things that we couldn’t take (but didn’t want to throw away).
  • I have more friends than I thought (also shout out to my online recovery friends who put up with my bullshit the past several weeks)
  • My husband is amazing at Getting Shit Done.

For real, Derrick has been my hero through this process. He did 90% of the hard stuff for this move – the paperwork, the communication with our helpers in Liechtenstein, the sorting of possessions, the throwing out of heavy trash bags – and most importantly, gave me lots of support and hugs while I freaked out.

Us being cute last week at his going away party

I’m so glad that we aren’t doing this alone. We’ve got friends who are already over there who have volunteered to be our guides. Derrick’s job makes relocation easy in a lot of ways, but especially the realtor they use, who also is going to take us to city hall and help us get registered.

We also have a ton of support from family and friends. Thank you to everyone who has visited, called, FaceTimed, sent words of support, prayed, and encouraged us.

I’ll update again when we get there!
